If you only have $600 then i would go for a PS3 or an XBOX 360 and then use the rest on games. I would then start saving about $800 - $1000 and buy your own computer. It's only took me about 3 months to decide which parts I wanted in my custom rig. I am now buying 1 part, more if they are the cheaper parts, a month. Spending about $400 per month. I will be doing that for about 5 months. THis is so I can afford parts like the i7 960( more popular is the i7 2600K ), EVGA 570 superclocked, well hold on a second... This is my list of parts http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11354589 . There is no way I could EVER afford to drop that amount of money into a computer in one shot. Buying this piece by piece, and doing the exhaustive research that comes with a responsible informed decision, enables me to have a computer that will play the most recent games, games to come and games that are far down the road. I can still upgrade the CPU one day in about 3 years. I can add another 570 one day etc. The PSU is so friggin powerful because 1 I have a lifetime warranty with it and 2 I can add parts and not have to upgrade my PSU. I have purchased the case, cooler & 1TB HDD so far in addition to a The Motorola SBG6580 SURFboard eXtreme Wireless Cable Modem . So that my internet performance can match my current 20mbps fast connection. I LOVE the modem and the VERY EASY setup. I mean easy. Didn't even need the disc. I installed a fresh operating system on the new HDD and after I installed the drivers the internet was already available. I mean the ethernet adapted drivers. I didn't even need to run the setup disk for the modem. Yep it's an AWESOME modem & router in 1 solution. My speedwave http://postimage.org/image/2zoo2b3xg/ Fprtunately my ISP doesn't throttle or cap my service so I am actually receiving over twice my promised speed. The instal tech even said, after he found out which speed I was paying for, I would probably never see 20. He said my average will be closer to 40. I am now thinking about whether or not I really need the 100mbps service since I already have a faster connection. Well i used to only have the 1.5mbps provided by my landlord so this 40mbps+ speed is more than enough right now.
