    You would be the luckiest man alive if your console lived for a day. I've seen the towel trick done it varied from a solid 6 hours down to about 10 minutes. The towel trick is not very effective because it overheats your console even more than to what caused it to get RROD in the first place. If your Xbox 360 was purchased less than three years ago you can call 1-800-4MY-XBOX to have it shipped to Microsoft and fixed for free. If not then a repair like that can cost you well over $100.

Honestly? Not very long at all. Maybe a few hours, maybe days. But it is only delaying the inevitable. Your xbox is broke, you need to get it repaired. By using the 'towel trick', you are only cushioning the vibrations of the xbox, helping to temporally stop the X-Clamps from moving anymore out of place.
