Is having a higher pulse rate healthier?

As a runner, do I have a pulse rate problem?

  • I have been running for a few years now and am currently 19. I did cross country and track in high school and guess I really didn't pay attention to my pulse rate much. Now I'm taking a course in college and we're doing vital signs. My pulse rate was 120 last week when we did it, and in the 90's this week when we did it. It is a very fast pulse and you can visually see it in my radial artery. It seems normal to me and my heart usually beats pretty fast, but I'm concerned. I will ask my doctor about it soon, but want some opinions for now. I know runners usually have lower pulses like in the 40-50 range. When I run, I don't seem tired, don't seem tired after, don't feel I have a problem but the number scares me. Somebody suggested not enough rest, but I never feel terribly tired during/ after a run. I run 30-35 miles per week. I'm 5'8" and 135 lbs. Tachycardia is the fast rate, do I have this? I know this is a question for my doctor, but what do some of you think? My teacher couldn't connect and I can't understand how I'm in great shape, but have a high pulse/heart rate? Heart rate and pulse are the same, correct? Thanks

  • Answer:

My pulse rate when resting is 60 and when i run it gets as high as 175 or 180. I am an avid runner and i run 50-65 miles a week.
