Is yahoo free to users?

Isn't it time that users stop pretending that they have "free speech" rights on Yahoo!?

  • http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080706/ap_on_hi_te/tec_disappearing_freedoms "the law is fully with Yahoo. Its terms of service, similar to those of other service providers, gives Yahoo "sole discretion to pre-screen, refuse or remove any content." Service providers aren't required to police content, but they aren't prohibited from doing so ... First Amendment protections generally do not extend to private property in the physical world, allowing a shopping mall to legally kick out a customer wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a smoking child. " I think it is about time people stopped whining about having their "rights violated" and accept some responsibility for their actions. What say you?

  • Answer:

I've never complained about free speech, I just wish they'd explain exactly why you've been suspended or deleted. I wouldn't do it if they were more clear.

I'm new here. I guess it depends on what a person says. We don't have the right to threaten others on here. I see some pretty threatening comments as I browse through the questions. I agree with you.

I agree completely. I have had more answers and questions deleted than I can remember but I do not complain about it. Yahoo is a private company. They can monitor and Censor anything they want. I quite often give answers that offend people and although I wish my answers could be read by others and hope they would in time come around to my way of thinking I understand the way the law is written. There is no reason to complain and whine about anything here. If someone does not like the way that this company runs their site than they should leave.

Its pretty much the same in real life. If you aren't in a free speech zone or don't have a permit, your butt is going to jail. Article: "Rant all you want in a public park. A police officer generally won't eject you for your remarks alone, however unpopular or provocative." LOL, thats a crock.

Yahoo is like the government. If they're OK with what you say, they don't delete it. The government makes us think we're free, but we only know what they want us to know, when they want us to know and if they want us to know. I guarantee you, if we did know everything the government knew, we'd be horrified.

I've always said, We have a right to go and start our own WebSite, so if you don't like YH - leave it. I have seen biased deletion from time to time; however I believe that may be due to whoever is working that shift and additionally what type of members are on-line at any given moment. It YH's Website, don't matter to me. I agree with you regarding people complaining.

I believe the problem lies in....NOT READING THE GUIDE LINES. If vile words....threats....hate speech...or derogatory remarks directed at another individual are part of a contributors comments or questions....then The contributor has violated the rights of others....and.... Our rights end....where another's begin.

The power is given to a few who constantly report questions and answers from people whose views they don't like. And their questions are constantly deleted. So, when we get annoyed to the Max, I guess we know what to do.

i've never been under any illusion that there are any free speech rights on a commercial site like yahoo. and i've certainly never thought yahoo cared much for free speech, anyway-this is the company that helped chinese authorities round up dissidents

This is Yahoo's soap box. If they don't like what I say - and the often don't - they have every right to tell me to shut up.
