What was this kind of pain?

What kind of pain could this be?

  • Background: I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (AKA EDS) so my joints pop out REALLY easily, I have arthritis, and my skin is elastic. The pain I'm about to describe and talk about isn't related to the EDS... I just know. It feels different than when my joints pop out a lot, or when I have the worst ache I could have in any other joint due to the EDS... been there done that all my life. This is far worse. It hurts so bad that I want to cut my leg off or cut my wrists just to end the pain. Even hit my leg and bruised it/cut it to relieve the pain. It comes and goes but definitely just steadily gets worse the more I do. Can be anything from walking too much, standing for more than a few minutes, or the dr pulling on my leg to see how loose my knees are. My right knee doesn't hurt AT ALL when they do that but my left leg... Won't hurt right away, takes 10 mins to a few hours or a few days... it varies. Then the only thing that'll relieve it is to be a couch potato for a month or two. I was prescribed a lot of meds but none but two worked. One hospital I went to would never give me a narc... over a year I went there too! Just gave me ibuprofen and the stuff that's stronger and can give me ulcers. Ultracet worked, got that first visit when I went to the Psych ward for suicidal thoughts caused from the pain. The Ultracet only took it down from a 10 to a 6-7 on good days... but when the weather was bad and cold... it still was a 9-10 even if I took more than one. Pot cures the pain 100% though. Doesn't do anything else for my other joint pains (Also how I know it's a different pain... feels different and I still have the joint pains while taking the meds). The pain also moves. Sometimes it'll be in the front of my knee, sometimes behind it, and sometimes above my knee around my thigh and sometimes higher. There's an odd thing about it too... When the pain gets BAD!!!! And then goes away, my knee will itch like crazy. Not my skin, under it and I have to dig hard and long to get rid of it. Sometimes I just have to wait for it to go away because scratching doesn't get rid of it. The pain started when I took weightlifting in HS, 2004. I worked on my ham strings and my leg popped and hurt every time I curled my legs. I was told all this was in my head by my family at this time so I just ignored the pain. After that class, it seemed the pain slowly got worse over the years. First I could just keep moving around and it wouldn't hurt as bad as just standing in one spot. Now I can only walk 2 hours before I feel like cutting off my leg and 10-20 mins; 30 mins MAX before the pain gets that bad. Sometimes it'll feel like a wooden wedge is between my bones. MRI said that my knee cap had ademia or something and my tibia/fibia or what ever were slightly displaced (AKA proof that I have EDS lol... knew that...and useless for finding out the cause for this mysterious pain that the drs can never understand). I've been depressed for the past 7 years because of this, and haven't been able to hold a job more than a few days to a few months max. And those few months I worked I had to leave early due to the pain and didn't even make over 500 bucks! I looked up Dysesthesia pain or something. Sounded close but my pain is more of a dull wooden wedge in the center of my knee and usually sharp if I've done something to aggravate it (Running/getting hyper and my knee pops/etc), itchy, sometimes dull when I'm in bed rest mode, and just gives me this urge to gnaw my knee off... Going to try getting tested for Fibromyalgia and other arthritis. But until then I've been handed dr to dr and they all say "Go see Rheumatology." They say "Go see Orthopedics" They say "Go see Physical Medicine and Rehab." They say "Go see Rheumatology." and etc... for a year... so I'm trying to figure it out myself like I normally do (Diagnosed myself with ADHD and EDS then of course I got the drs to confirm it. And I've spent the last 7 years in limbo and no medical insurance... finally have it and trying to find the right drs but the ones I've seen in the past year can't figure it out... Any ideas? Oh yea I live with pain 24/7 because of my joints... I can handle and ignore pain that most people would think extremely painful. So when I say it hurts... best believe me when I say anyone else had this pain... they would have killed themselves the first hour they had it! I'm also 24. And I'm terrified of this pain... It's extremely rare for me to be afraid of anything. lol I have a complicated medical history... but that's another story...

It took me over 30years to get rid of my pains from falling out of a care when I was 3. In that time the one thing I found out is that they dr.'s don't seem to know squat about pain or what to do for it. Had to go to alternative stuff to find answers for myself. In doing that I also found out that a lot of leg pains are caused by tight muscles in the lower back for they can press onto the muscles that go to both your legs and hips to cause pain in either of them. It would seem this might be what you have especially in the fact that it will go away. That kind of pain can be gotten rid of by freeing up the muscles in your back which will get the pressure off the nerves and here's how to do that: Back: (do from a sitting position) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed. Hope you find some relief in this.

could the pain be caused by the damage done by EDS...when your knee pops out--it can damage the nerves, tendons and ligaments.... i have noticed when i have aninjury, often i itch just as it is almost healed

I really don't know the answer to your question, but I have a syndrome that can be linked to EDS. If you go to the Chiari Institute and click on videos , then on the video page click on Ehrlers Danlos Conference. It really is linking Chiari Malformation (which you probably don't have) to EDS, but I was wondering if you could possibly call the institute to find out some specialists to go to. Otherwise I would look up a support group for EDS and find a blog of other patients and have them recommend a doc for you. Good Luck and I'm sorry you are in pain, people just don't understand "invisible diseases".
