How do I wire up two separate amps in my car?

(strange) One amp works fine. If two amps are installed, inline fuse sparks and amp fries.?

  • Here is how my system is set up: I have two amps set up. The pos. wire from the battery is connected to a distribution block, with one wire going into each amp. The remote wire coming from the head unit is connected to the terminal on the first (sub) amp, and then another wire is running from that terminal to the remote terminal on the other amp. Both amps are grounded with heavy-gauge wire to the bare frame of the car. It is a solid ground. Here is the strange part: For some time, I was only using one amp to power my front speakers, and my sub amp was disconnected. when I tried to bring my second amp back into commision, I wired it up as stated above after disconnecting the inline fuse on the power wire. when I put the inline fuse back in, it sparked, and when I turned my car on, the second amp started smoking and died. I tried it with a spare amp and the same thing happened. If I only run the first amp, everything works fine, no sparks or anything, but if I connect the second one, it will blow.

  • Answer:

did you disconnect the battery before doing anything?

The other thing that you need to take into consideration is that your using 2 amps, that fuse should be big enough and strong enough to handle both amps, that will stop the fuse from blowing. As for the amp getting fried, you just learned a hard lesson about disconnecting the battery before doing anything dealing with electrical current. What you did also voided any warranty that may have been with either amp, not to mention any amp that is connected to the distribution block. I know this news for you sucks, but I think that we all have learned that lesson when we started installing our own equipment. I personally have not since I pay close attention to every little detail.
