Will this amp work?

I Please need advice on my Amp to power my new stereo (and if it will also work w/my subs)?

  • I had a Sony Xplod CD player (CDX-GT320) installed in my car (95 Diamante) last year-Circuit City installed the stereo but said since my factory amp was bad (it was), I wouldn’t get any sound until I bought a new amp. I found out (after they closed all Circuit City’s) that they could have “bypass wired” in order to let me have SOME sound from my stereo (but they did not) so now my stereo turns on-but I have no sound (they did not hook it to any speakers). I was recently given an amp (Eclipse 3640, 4/3/2 Channel) and a subwoofer set (Roadmaster 2-way). (#1) If I have this amp installed, will it power both my interior car speakers AND the Subwoofer-or only “one or the other”? One car place told me that I would need 2 amps (to use the Eclipse for the interior speakers, & get a new one for the subs). (#2) Is this correct? I am on a VERY tight budget and need to get my interior speakers working to listen to my stereo, and if possible somehow power the subs-(#3) what are my options and if I need 2 amps, what basic amp is best to power the subs? (I don’t need anything fancy) Lastly: Nat'l Auto Sound is quoting me $180-$200 to install the Eclipse amp to my interior factory speakers-(#4) is this a normal price??

    your amp will not power both the interior and the subs. use that amp for the interior speakers, and save up for another for the subs. actually, you can just power your interior speakers from the radio, and then use the amp for the sub. you will have to run wires from the radio to the speakers, and depending on your car, it can be hard to hide the wiring. but thats what i did to my mom's 2000 camaro, and it sounds great.

I have always used 2 amps.One for my front and rear speakers(a 4 channel amp) and one for my subs(2 channel amp).If you are on a budget and just want music then you could use this amp for your interior speakers until you save up enough for a second amp,or get another stereo and use the amp for the subs. About the labor quote,that does seem high.Try a couple of stores and see what the other ones say before you decide.

Actually here is your answer, an amp that has 2 or more channels was not meant to power subs, they were meant to power interior (full range) speakers. Amps that were meant to power subs are mono blocks amps, meaning an amp that has 1 channel. So use the amp that you have to power the interior speakers, save more money to get an amp for your subs, and then save some more money and replace that stereo. Sony car audio has very poor audio reproduction. You can find a never been used Alpine, Pioneer, or Kenwood stereo that is a year or 2 old that will cost you less than $100 and will sound 1000 X's better than that sony stereo could ever hope to sound. The last thing is this, $180 - $200 is way too much to install an amp. Shops around here in San Diego will not charge you anything more than $80 to install an amp for you. I will charge $30 to install an amp for you. So you can take it from there. $180 is absurd, that is $100 over the norm.
