Is it normal for my amp to get a little hot?

Why Does My Amp Get So Hot?

  • I just bought two 15's with a 3000w amp. A friend n I connected it. Im having two problems. One- i cant turn it up high because the amp just shuts down the speakers for some reason. Couple ppl told me it was because the stock stereo is not strong enough but who knows. Someone else told me im not getting enough ground. But my other problem is after a while my amp starts heating up really hot. I know its not normal. What do I have to do to fix this before its too late? Can someone answer me those two questions please. I need serious answers

  • Answer:

Its means your amp is up to high. If you want more power get a another amp or battery, but in the mean time keep your Level knob at the most halfway.

ok it has nothing to do with your stereo. but electronics put of heat. keep your amp in an open area to help the amp stay cool your amp is getting hot cause your telling it to do so much work also a good way to fix this would be to turn your settings all the way down also i would get a smaller inline fuse to keep it from pulling so many amps into it so your stuff does not catch fire. make sure you give your amp some breathing room don't keep it in a tight area and check to make sure your heat sinks are all still good on the board inside the amp i hope that helps you i think the inline fuse will help you out a lot i would go with an 80 and slowly work your way up as you pop the fuses 100amp fuse should be just fine im pushing a 2400w amp on a 80amp fuse

You are "clipping your amp" most likely meaning that you are giving the amp to much power you have the gains and everything not tuned properly. Other possibility is you are using a amp that has power ratings under the rms rating of the sub. If you have two subs rated at 1000 wrms a piece thats 2000wrms and if the amp is only putting out 500wrms its going to put out more heat because heat is what a sub strives and runs off. It takes heat to create power, that's why its good to invest in a good expensive amp cuz they dissipate heat better. Make sure your amp is not under powering or over powering the subs you want a perfect match. Also be sure you are running at least 8 gauge wire for anything over 500 watts. I personally would go with a bigger wire, bigger is better. So your problem doesn't have to do with the grounds or head unit you are probably running a class a/b 2 channel amp on 2 15's You would want a class D ( monoblock) That should solve your problem.

I have Rockford Fosgates I bought a year ago. If I drive for about 45 minutes with my stereo up all the way the amp will get hot and shut off. Its a safety measure built into the amp. Try to find a computer fan that you can hook up to the amp via ground and remote wire. You could relocate the amp to maybe underneath the seat then put your ac on feet? you need to make sure you get lots of air space to the amp. Good Luck
