Can I file as an independent?

Can you file "independent" on taxes but "dependent" on FAFSA?

  • I am fairly sure you can't but I just want to be sure about this. My mother hasn't paid for any of my expenses this is entire year and I lived with a friend's family for the summer before I moved into my apartment in August. I worked part time and went to school part time in the summer too. The last year I lived in the dorms. I have already filed my taxes as an independent because she pays for less than 51% of my bills and stuff (0% actually) but when I was filling out the FAFSA it said that I was technically a dependent still (second year in college currently). I have gotten financial aid the last 2 years too. I just don't know if there is an appeal that I can do to be "labeled" as an independent for the FAFSA or if I have to redo my taxes. Thought out answers are appreciated and I have already made an appointment with a financial aid adviser but I would just like to hear from you guys! Thanks!

    One really has nothing to do with the other as they have different definition of what it means to be a dependent. For FAFSA purposes, it is VERY hard to be considered independent if you are unmarried, under 23 and live at home/dorms. In fact, its nearly impossible.

your aid office may require copies of your tax returns to see what basis you have for financial aid but it does appear you were eligible to claim independent on your tax returns, for the residency and support requirements

to be an "independent" for FAFSA, I believe you have to submit some kind of document proclaiming independence contact FAFSA for instructions
