UTorrent Program Gave me Viruses?
-
I downloaded uTorrent on my computer, but never actually installed it. I know that's strange, but I think I had to leave the computer before it could finish, and I forgot about it. Well about a month later, my computer wasn't working. I took it to a shop (it's a laptop) and the lady said it was uTorrent. There wound up being 300+ viruses, that she said were cause by uTorrent. I don't understand this, I never even used the program. How is this possible?

Answer:
They probably just attributed the issue to uTorrent because it is very easy to get viruses/malware on your computer by downloading torrents from various sources. If you never used the program, then it's doubtful the viruses came from that, but given that computers can become infected just by accessing infected/compromised websites now-a-days it's very easy.

It isn't. The program uTorrent cannot possibly give you any viruses, it is just a source. In fact, uTorrent is as safe as, if not safer, than Windows Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Safari. However, the actual torrent files you download can cause viruses, though this is rare. Computer security programs such as McAfee and Norton pick up on torrents with viruses almost instantly. The only way to get a virus from uTorrent is downloading a .torrent file from the internet that already has a virus in it. So on to how your computer became filled with viruses. I'm sure you know those advertisements that appear on the side of your internet screen. What can sometimes happen is these ads open on their own as pop-ups. Occasionally, when you "x" out of these pop-ups, the ad will release a virus into your computer. These are beyond the users control. If left unchecked, these "micro-viruses" accumulate over time and ruin your computer. The viruses are each filled with false information, so what happens is they will "disguise" themselves as coming from innocent files or programs (like uTorrent) so the actual creator of the virus is not blamed. Once the viruses are in your system, they scan through your computer and "find" a program to latch onto. Sometimes it's a game file, sometimes it's iTunes, and sometimes it's uTorrent. The viruses do their job and uTorrent is shown as the culprit. This is becoming quite common these days with talented hacking groups popping up around the world. This is why you MUST do a computer security check AT LEAST once a month.

Such sites often do carry infected material, even though their download program may be clean, they are not bothered about offering infected files. But it may have been infected elsewhere, a careless click when browsing could have infected the machine. The shop would possibly assume uTorrent was the cause as it often is. There is actually nothing to indicate where an infection came from.

The lady at the shop is flapping her gluteus maximus if you got the utorrent from http://www.utorrent.com/ There are any number of vectors for viruses to get in and they often make it easy for others to get in. The best solution in your case is to back up your data, then blow away your OS and reinstall it. Mind you, utorrent is very capable of downloading infected stuff but it itself is not a virus.

imo, It kinda isn't. She's just heared it causes virus' and assumes it's because of uTorrent, with the exception of if the uTorrent you downloaded was a virus that kept replicating it self. It wouldn't surprise me if a few hundred of those said virus' are just tracking cookies. for the future, assuming your not buying anti virus software like me, i assume because of the 300 virus' lol. i use http://uk.trendmicro.com/uk/products/personal/free-tools-and-services/index.html or google trend micro>products>free and there be something called housecall. it's not best of the best but it's good. Add it to windows task scheduler (assuming it's windows) and have it run say once a month for a clean up
