How Long Can Sperm Survive In A Deceased Male Body?

  • So... my EMS class has got me thinking a lot about the human body and its possibilities. Now, I've thought about different scenarios that I might encounter on the job, and one brought me to a rather strange question. Let's say we have a husband and his wife who are planning on having children. However, before the woman can become pregnant, her husband dies in an accident. His body is still intact. Would it be possible for a doctor to extract living sperm from the deceased man's body (within a short amount of time) so that his wife can still have his child? Furthermore, how long will sperm survive in a deceased male body? Will it be an instant death, a matter of minutes, or even a few hours? My apologies for this strange, strange subject.

  • Answer:

LOL, not a strange question. In fact, my husband has a claus in his advance directives/ Will which entitles me to his sperm for the purpose of banking it for future children. We were told that in the event something happens we would have to inform the doctors right away! There is a short window to work with. Something about body temp dropping.

within a couple of hours in perfect conditions (well, i know its not perfect considering he would be dead but you get the point) Once the body temperature starts to drop then the sperm would start dying rapidly However, if he experienced a lot of trauma to his genitals then all of the sperm may die almost immediately. If the he was exposed to high heat (like in a fire) im sure the sperm would die very quickly.

probably within a couple of hours, because of body temperature changing.

Some very interesting answers here. Strange but true. Feel sorry for the little swimmers though. Fancy knowing your real father is crossing over and you are soon to be inserted into a womb.

IT actually has been done before, we discussed it in my bioethics class. This is a decent article, though difficult to understand at some points: http://humrep.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/21/11/2890 And wikipedia has some interesting facts as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posthumous_sperm_retrieval Not a weird question :-)
