How to get rid of diarrhea?

I have an 8 month old son with diarrhea. how do i get rid of it?

  • He is eating stage 2 and 3 solids on a daily basis and has been for awhile (just started stage 3's this month) Has approximately 20 oz of formula a day and he drinks juice everyday. he just recently got diarrhea and i don't know how to get rid of it. Please help

  • Answer:

My daycare provider mentioned the 'BRAT' diet for diarrhea. Bananas, rice, apples, and toast. Apples in juice form can actually cause diarrhea, but in baby food it tends to be binding. Do make sure he's getting plenty of fluid...perhaps a little Pedialyte to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated.

he may be teething. i would take away the juice and see if that helps. This is what i am currently trying with my 9 month old who is having the same issue.

Bowels have a lot to do with what you consume. If he doesn't have other flu like symptoms, (overly drowsy, runny nose, cough, fever, ect) then I wouldn't be too concerned. Try giving him less juice for a while. Juice tends to loose things up. Give him some bread or cracker if he has teeth. But there's a balance...you don't want him to go the other direction and be constipated. :) good luck.

it could be coming from a variety of things. *he could be teething. my daughter gets diarrhea when she gets teeth *he could be having a reaction to the juice. try watering it down *or he could be having a reaction to one of the foods he is eating.

No solids, no dairy. Clear liquids only until his stomach settles. That means Pedialyte, Gatorade, flat Sprite, diluted apple or pear juice, and water. Then go to the BRAT diet for a day or two--Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. THEN start adding his regular foods back in. Hang in there!

Do NOT take away the fluids! Your child will dehydrate! Give him a bottle of purified water with a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. You can also give him apple juice. For solids, five him carrots for main meal and bananas for dessert. If your child's diarrhea is caused by teething, massage his gums with your clean fingers or a cool teething toy. Avoid giving your child milk unless he is breastfed and feed him small amounts of food often throughout the day rather than give him bigger portions a few times a day; this takes some of the 'stress' away from the stomach. If your child's diarrhea persists for more than 3 days, he needs to be seen by a doctor. Good luck! i hope he feels better soon!

I would cut back his juice intake. He could be getting to much. But do not give him anything (medicine) to actually get rid of the diarrhea. Diarrhea is out body's way of getting rid of bad stuff in our system. So if your son happens to have a stomach bug (example) you could make it last longer, or possibly make it worse.

when the BRAT diet isn't working, then you can go to your local drugstore and ask the pharmacist for baby pro-biotics... they are completely safe, you can call your ped or nurse about them.. it is like $12 for a box of 10 packets.. you will only use 2 packets ,1 in the evening and 1 the next morning and his diarrhea will be gone.. i keep these on hand for my son .. they work like a charm..

The juice is likely the culprit. Try to get him to drink water or mixed water and juice, if not Pedialyte while he's not feeling well.
