Not following doctors orders for newborn blood test. What can they do?
-
My 3 day old baby has a higher than they'd like to see bilirubin level (my son had the same thing and it is most likely b/c my blood type is negative and the children's is positive; although there are many other possible reasons). I don't want to keep having my little one poked every day just to see that yes, she is still above normal (b/c bilirubin levels peak day 3-5 of life). So, I didn't go for the second follow up blood test. Will the doctor take any action? Will she refuse to be my daughter's doctor or do we as parents have the right to not follow every single direction the doctor gives us?

I don't think there is anything they can do, but why would you not have the tests done if there is the slightest chance that something could be wrong. That is a chance I would never take with my children.
I cannot believe any doctor would refuse treatment for lack of doing everything they said, I do not believe anyone who says they follow EVERYTHING a doctor says... from 'no bottle after 1' to 'never use an excer-saucer' and on & on... we all adjust our doctors advice to our childs needs. And our kids are all fine! When it comes to the health and possible sickness of your child, you do have the right to not vaccinate them. Or sleep them on their belly, but why would you risk it??? A small thing, like getting a needle, hardly seems the time to stand on your soapbox. If they had to do a spinal tap or something more invasive, I would at least hear you out. But a simple blood test? C'mon? I understand you feel bad, or even cry when he gets his/her shots. But if this is something your doctor feels is important, then I think you should do it. Just my opinion. Whatever you do, I'll pray for the health & happiness of you and your family.
I know you don't want to see your little one in pain, but why don't you want to do everything in your power to make sure he/she is okay? I wouldn't worry about the doctor, but if you have insurance - they might be an issue. When my son was born, he had fluid in one of his ears. Well, he needed to go to get a follow-up exam. I did the follow-up and kept records of it. Well at 10-months old, he needed tubes because of constant ear infections. My insurance company called the doctor to send them proof that he was cleared as an infant from when he had fluid in his ear at birth.
Wow. I also have negative blood, and it DOES cause a baby to have jaundice....however, why your daughter has jaundice doesn't even matter. What matters is how it is, and if any hospitalization is required. They test to make sure it doesn't get over a certain level. If it does, some time in the hospital for light treatments might be needed. And you *know* your daughter's jaundice hasn't improved, because you said that it's still above normal....... Yes, as parents we do have the right not to follow every single direction the doctor gives us. Even if that decision is incredibly ignorant. Take your baby in to get her levels checked. Jeez.
I don't know if you will have any repercussion from the doctor, but are you aware that a high bilirubin level can cause brain damage? "However, jaundice may hard to see in infants with dark skin, and it is difficult to judge how high the bilirubin level is just by looking. There are simple, inexpensive blood and skin tests available to check an infant’s bilirubin level. If the infant’s condition progresses to kernicterus, he may develop cerebral palsy, uncontrolled involuntary muscle movements (spasticity), mental retardation, hearing loss, and difficulty moving his eyes (gaze paresis)." http://rarediseases.about.com/cs/kernicterus/a/090703.htm I guess it's your call, but a heel stick really isn't that big of a deal and definitely not worth risking severe injury to your child.
No, The doctor can't do anything. they can refuse to be your child's doctor, but they can refuse anyone, on just about any reason. You have the right to refuse ANY test or treatment they Reccomend. I mean there are parents out there that Refuse Cancer treatments and Blood transfusions. If they can refuse those things, you certianly can refuse a blood test. lol It sounds like you are Familiar with this and i'm sure you know what you're doing. :) If it were me, i'd probably have it checked sometime AFTER the peak, if she's still looking yellow, just to make sure it's going down and not getting worse.. :)
Too much bili in a baby's blood can cause brain damage. Why would you even want to risk it? And the Dr. should report you to CPS if you neglect to take care of your child.
You don't have to follow the dr's orders, you pay them. I would make sure my child's health is ok but I understand not wanting your child checked that often. I've heard they can report to CPS if they think you not following orders is putting your child at risk. It's against my religion to vaccinate so I don't follow dr's orders on that and they havent done anything b/c its federally protected and I talked to the Ped about it. Talk to the Ped and see if they can check less often.
