Skinny Horse won't gain weight. Why?

Horse wont gain weight and now has a nose bleed?

  • I have a 26 year old Appaloosa gelding that I have had since August he is very under weight. He was skin and bones when I got him I owned him 6 years ago and found him just in August. I have tried everything he gets hay all he wants, half a coffee can of 14% sweet feed in the mornin and evening, his teeth have been floated, when I owned him 6 years ago if he was on a dry lot he'd lose weight so I thought get him home on grass and grain and hay and worm him he'd snap out of it I even started him on MSM but it hasnt worked yet and now this evening I found his nose is bleeding has anyone seen this in older horses and is it very serious like I am thinking or am I just being over paranoid?

  • Answer:

Nose bleed is generally a t.b thing - burst a blood vessel. If he's old it's a b"tch to put weight back on them. heres what I do with my golden oldie ( he's 32) -morning- he gets haylage - 1 scoop beet pulp (bulker) 1 scoop oats and 1 scoop of senior mix along with 2 tsp of corn oil and 2 tsp of linseed oil and some joint powder as he has arthritas. afternoon - he's at grass with haylage if he wants it. evening; same as morning except alfalfa is added and in the winter bran mash also. keep him rugged up in the winter. nope your not being paranoid.
