Skinny Horse won't gain weight. Why?

Horse wont gain weight?!? what do i do?

  • i have tried to put weight on him for a wile now. i mean he isn't horribly skinny but his ribs are fairly visible. (im bad a spelling) i been feeding him 2 gallons of sweet feed in the morning and at night. i have been putting about 2 spoonfuls of corn syrup in his feed and he has been eating 3-4 flakes of hay. i have tried everything i know to do. and yes we have wormed him with a powerpack. there has been little if any weight gain. any suggestions?

  • Answer:

first,STOP all the sweet feed!it's not good for any horse to be getting that much.Sweet feed has pretty much become obsolete,as there are much better feeds to be feeding.Alot of horses don't even need to receive grain, tho we often feed it anyway to make ourselves feel better.I would have him checked by a vet just to make sure all is well. You didn't give any specifics regarding your horse,so i'm guessing here, excuse me!I would go with rice bran, try the powder first,it's a little cheaper,if they aren't willing to eat it,try the liquid next.I would be sure the grain is switched over gradually, they can certainly get by on a pound or so,until this is all resolved.I hope this puts your horset ultimately on a better plane of nutrition.i hope this helps. i
