Wireless connection keeps dropping out?

Sony laptop keeps dropping wireless internet connection?

  • New Sony Vaio CS2 with Vista Home premium connects OK to wireless home network and get good internet connection. Then, after a while (esp after it hibernates) network connection shows that it is still connected to internet, but cannot connect to anything on internet until I disconnect from network then re-connect. Any suggestions what I can do to fix it? Thanks.

  • Answer:

Usually you only need to right click on the WiFi icon in the system tray and select Repair from the popup menu. When the computer hibernates, it dumps the contents of the system's memory direct to the hard drive. When it emerges from hibernation, the system reloads the system memory from what was stored on the hard drive. The problem is that the state of the WiFi connection was stored too, and its no longer accurate. It usually shows that it is connected, when in fact it may not be connected. Repairing the connection usually works, but in extreme cases you may have to reboot. If you're having trouble at times when you haven't hibernated, watch the signal strength meter. Make sure that you're not dropping the signal. Also, make sure that the system is not turning the WiFi connection off to save power. Many laptops will disable the WiFi connection after its been idle for a few minutes. You will usually have to cold boot the computer to recover it. My suggestion is to disable the computer's ability to turn off the WiFi adapter.
