How To Boost Internet?

How do I boost internet wireless signal to my desktop?

  • I have bought a router and it connects to the central modem so that all the house gets wireless internet. However, my CPU only gets a fair and poor signal. Other computers and laptop with wireless system next to my desktop get higher strengths but my desktop doesn't. I bought a router with 1 antenna so that it can boost the signal overall. The signal strength has changed to the other computers except my desktop. Would I need to disable the wireless in my desktop and purchase a router so that I can get a better signal.

  • Answer:

Most people forget or just don't know that their wireless adapters also have configuration settings, including Transmission Power. Make sure it's set to Highest, and Roaming is set to Aggressive. You can access your adapter's settings by right-clicking on it in the Device Manager and selecting Properties. Power settings are typically in the Advanced tab. Don't forget to consider the adapter's wireless settings as well; they should match your Router's wireless band settings for optimum signal. A single incorrect setting can cause as much as 50% or more drop in overall signal. Keep in mind as well any potential RFI sources (electronics) or anything that can block a radio signal (metal, e.g.)
