Is it possible to adjust the display brightness on my Dell Latitude?

I can't I consistently connect my Dell latitude D531 laptop to an external display?

  • One of our Latitude D531 laptops in our office is giving me some trouble connecting to an external display. It runs Vista Business SP1. Some days, it will start up and automagically connect to an external LCD like it is supposed to. Other days, it refuses to connect at all, the external LCD will say that it isn't connected and will enter power saving mode. The external LCD works just fine on other computers. Doesn't matter if I connect through the dock or when un-docked and directly plugged in. There is a Fn + F8 key combination that cycles through either the onboard LCD only, external display only, or both. When the external display will not connect, the key combination does nothing. When the external display connects like it is supposed to, then the key combination will also function normally. When I check under the display settings, it also acts like nothing is connected, when I try to activate the second monitor, it just goes right back to a grayed out monitor. I use it to display in extended desktop mode as opposed to mirrored mode, if that makes a difference.

  • Answer:

I believe that its quite possible the system itself is not recognizing when the monitor is connected. As a result, it's quite possible that you'll have to contact Dell for support with this.
