Laptop Overheating, causing problems?

  • I have 2 laptops, one of which has major problems. It is a Gateway MT3422. CPUID hardware monitor reports temperatures of the processor (AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core TK-53 1.70GHz) around 45-55C idle and the GPU Core (Nvidia GeForce Go 6100) 60-65C idle. When I do anything that is somewhat graphically intensive the GPU gets up to 80C and sometimes even higher, the CPU temperature also raises to about the same temperature. This sounds a little high to me, and seems to be causing problems. It gets extremely hot and the screen messes up displaying random colors, this also happens when you make a slight movement it. Only thing I and do is hold down the power button to shut it off and let it cool down. I don't know if the over heating is causing it or not, also sometimes it won't even turn on. The fact both GPU and CPU raise to about the same temperature leads me to believe one is causing the other to raise, guessing that both components are close to each other. I may be wrong. I'd appreciate if anyone could help me solve the problem. Thanks :D

  • Answer:

Well if you use the laptop on your lap the bottom over the laptop is usually where the fan is and if its in yours lap yours pant can be blocking the exiting heat from the fan.
