My friend have a problem with his Mac?

Need advice on whether or not to buy this mac?

  • I am a graphic design student and am currently starting my junior year in college. In order to keep up with the course work and doing low level design work on the side, I need a mac. All the labs at my school consist of imac's or mac pro's, and it is "highly recommended" that all design students have their own. The only problem is that I'm on a pretty tight budget at the moment. Here's where we come to my question: A friend of mine is selling his mac since he is upgrading. The specifications he lists are: Apple Power Mac G5 -- $399.99 1.8GHz Dual Processor (PCI) 1.0 160GB SuperDrive (FX5200 64MB) 1.8GHz G5 Dual Processor 1.0GB RAM 160GB Hard Drive DVD-RW/CD-RW SuperDrive FX5200 video card (64MB) ADC and DVI video ports (DVI to VGA video adapter NOT included) 2- USB ports 3- Firewire ports (1-FW800 port) Ethernet port Is this a good price for the system? If it is, what can I do to upgrade? Are there any limitations to upgrading a mac? Sorry if it's common knowledge, I'm primarily a pc user. :-) Thank you for your help!!

Don't get it. Since it's a G5, it's already hopelessly obsolete. You might as well just get a PC or something, since even a PC would be better than that relic for your needs.

Yeah that model is pretty much obsolete. I would see if you can work out a plan through your school to get a new or used macbook if you must have a mac. If not I would just buy a newer pc, they're much cheaper than macs and you get more for your money. Mac is just a name and you pay almost twice as much for half the hardware.
