Chkdsk /f hidden files?
-
I performed a chkdsk /f on a hard drive now the files are hidden. I can see the drive in My Computer and it shows the used space that it did before, but when I actually view the hard drive, it says its empty. Are my files gone or are they just hidden? If they are hidden how do I view them again?

Answer:
Move on to control panel, then click the Tools - Folder Option - View - then check out the view files options, which will show you the hidden files in your computer. Thanks.

Files normally only disappear from a Chkdsk function if they were corrupted and had to be converted to CHK files, you have a virus on your computer on in fact, files have been switched to hidden view. Hidden view for "all files" is not normal. Only system files and certain other types should be hidden by any default. Optionally, your view settings may have been corrupted in the windows registry. Some keys to chkdsk are to a) keep your files backed up in the event they are lost, b) run it at least every couple weeks or so or problems compound to the point you get undesirable results and c) always run a chkdsk before every using defrag. Otherwise, defrag can move files when their respective file-system links were already broken and now chkdsk can not do its job. Reset File View: a) Open My Documents folder or any folder in which a file actually should exist (even if you can't see it). b) Click on Tools >> Folder Options >> View tab >> uncheck all boxes that show "hide..." >> APPLY c) Click "Apply to All Folders" Check for Viruses: a) update your antivirus program b) restart windows into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key before windows starts) c) perform a full system scan Due to not knowing the exact cause, I have to wait for some feedback if it is not already fixed by now. Note: if you have an update specifically for my answer thus far, please send me a msg so that I know to come and look. Thank you. Good luck.
In Control Panel/Folder Options/View change the hidden option. You can also rt-click any affected folder/properties and uncheck the "hidden" option.
