Why more important computer files are hidden?

Where are the hidden files on my computer?

  • I'm confused. If I right click on the c drive icon, (Win XP) and go to properties, it says that I've used 35 out of 40 gigabytes of hard drive space. However, if I double click that icon, and then check properties of all the folders inside it, the drive space used adds up to a lot less than the total indicated by the c drive. Where are the files that I am unable to find? I have the folder view options set to show hidden files, so that doesn't explain it. I tried running chkdsk /f and that didn't reveal anything significant. Thanks for your help.

I have always wondered that, but i know that computers use virtual ram, which is more or less, you use your hard drive to make your computer a little faster. i just always figured that is where the space that you cant use went. I forget the exact ammount, but it uses like.. 15 % of your total ram, is virtual ram from your harddrive Also, if you go to tools, and folder options, you can change it to veiw hidden files, just incase you did not know =P

Hidden files are system files. If you need more space, uninstall some programs and delete unused media.

In the folder view options below the show hidden files, there is one more option "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" Remove the tick mark from it and check. May be some virus files also will be there which you can view if you remove this option.
