Why more important computer files are hidden?

I found hundreds of hidden encrypted files on the computer that my son and husband use.?

  • I tried to figure out how to "decode" it..but kept getting locked out of things. Both my husband and son say "wasnt me"..The facts I could figure out...I found tutorials on how to Highjack the administrator...so I know this much..it was some one with password to the computer..me, my husband & my son. Fact..it was set up sometime between july 10-Oct 10..I believe that there was some type of remote monitoring cuz it kept locking me out when I would get so far into trying to read the scripts or what ever you call it. It contained documents, and images. some video type files. several encrypted files that contained thousands of lines and images from a game called ldw virtual families. also came across a thumbnail size print of someones baby in a carseat that did not belong to any one I know. I dont use the computer at all..but my son and husband did. but my name is attached to everything..the "network" was even created with my name as user. The internet, computer and everything is in my name so I understand that its more possible for me to go to jail than it is for the users of the computer to go to jail. I turned the computer in to police...was told that I would hear from him today if it wasnt anything illegal. Did not hear from him.. Wonder what I should do..im scared..I discussed with the police the possibility of it being kiddy porn. I cannot believe that Im going to go to jail for that. I didnt do it..and it seems as tho I cannot even prove I didnt do it.My husband and son also say they never downloaded anything ...

    You wouldn't be arrested for it, unless found guilty by a court of law. Whoever is found guilty won't be in jail long, but their name will always be on a list of sexual predators/abusers. You should try to get the computer back ASAP if you don't want anyone going to jail. As soon as you get it back, delete the files. You can hold shift then press the delete key while the files are selected. A virus could have potentially done it. There are all kinds of viruses, malware, and spyware that can put files on your computer without you knowing. It could be a virus written by a horrible person that wants to get innocent people put in jail and on the list.

It is certainly possible and does happen that your PC has been exploited (unknown to any of you) and is being used as a "Zombie PC" usually set up by a an group of enterprising criminals who then sell on this "list" of compromised/exploited zombie PCs (all unfortunate innocent users just like yourself) to anyone for whatever (usually nefarious) purpose- spam, warez, terrorism, child porn, DDoS attacks and so on, in your case for the purposes of serving, distribution and storage of illegal content thereby making it hard for law enforcement to trace the illegal files back to the original source. This is nasty and I am so sorry to hear this happened to you, but this not a new thing and the police are well aware of the practice. The best you can do is be as honest and cooperative as you can with the police and you should be okay.
