Why do i need a dvd decoder now, when i didnt before?

my windows media player used to play dvd with movies no problems. Then one day it started telling me it could not play the dvd, because it was not able to decode the dvd. Even though, the same dvd's it cant play now,,,are ones it has played in the past. my program is windows xp 2000

Answer:
Try upgrading to the latest version of Windows Media Player. Optionally, you can just switch over to VLC Media Player. Doesn't look as great as WMP, but it works better.

i would recommend downloading "K-Lite codec pack basic" it will allow you to play dvds as well Xvid files on your WMP since i had the same problem
