DVI to HDMI Connection?

HDMI to DVI PS3 Connection?

  • I'm looking to purchase an HDMI to DVI cable, but prior to investing in it, I have a question regarding audio transmission. The back of the HD television has a DVI slot, with audio jacks (red and white) next to it. Now, if I were to connect the PS3 to the tv, would I be able to have audio as well. I read somewhere that DVI only transmits visual, but no audio. Thanks.

  • Answer:

DVI is video only, no audio. This is why the DVI port on the back of your TV also has a pair of audio inputs. To connect your PS3, you'll need the HDMI/DVI cable, and then run a separate cable for audio. I recommend you use an optical audio cable to connect the PS3 to your surround sound receiver. This way you'll get surround while playing games or watching movies. The red/white audio cables only carry stereo sound, not surround sound. Be sure to go into the PS3's audio menu and make sure the PS3 is set to use the optical audio cable, not the HDMI cable, for audio. If you still want to use the TV's speakers, you'll have to also use the PS3's AV cable (this came with the PS3 and has yellow, red, white cables on one end and plugs into the PS3's AV port.) Ignore the yellow cable, and connect the red and white cables to the TV next to the DVI port. Go into your PS3's setup menu and be sure to analog audio so it'll use the red/white audio cables and not send the audio out on the HDMI cable.
