The ideal of representative democracy?

What do you think of this representative democracy? is it mob rule?

  • A country named X is formed. Each citizen has a right to vote for representatives. The govt has one legislative branch which has 200 senators that vote on bills and their president is the one who signs or vetos the bills. this reprenstative democracy also has a constitution that specifically protects the rights of individuals and minorities..so that 51% of the people cant vote to kill the other 49% etc.. They have a very well organized government, great roads, universal health care, a progressive income tax system ..great public schools, a strong military etc... they also have public financing of elections so that leaders are not beholden to big corporations and laws and policies generally reflect the mood or the will of the great majority of the people. The have big busines and banks but they have good common sense regulations to keep them from fleecing the people. They have tariffs to protect their home industries especially against countries that have tarifss against their goods. Is this democracy (representative) mob rule?????

  • Answer:

A representative democracy is contradictory with mob rule, since only a few make the laws. The other possible description of your government might be "oligarchy," but that doesn't work either since the few can be replaced. Just commenting: this sounds a bit like a European country with some modifications.
