What is freedom and democracy?

Is Freedom of expression the lifeblood of Democracy?

  • I have a debate with the topic, "Freedom of expression is the lifeblood of Democracy" and my team is on the negative side. So, essentially we must argue that freedom of expression is NOT the lifeblood of democracy. Anyone have any ideas what I could use as points?

  • Answer:

Well, freedom of expression isn't necessarily the lifeblood of Democracy, but we don't want democracy! What is democracy? It's nothing more than the rule of the majority. If we had democracy the majority would be able to silence unpopular opinions held by those in the minority. We should be striving for a society ruled by objective laws that protect the rights of every individual, regardless of the majority will. I don't know if you are allowed to approach the question in this manner, but that's the only reasonable answer you could give. I hope they don't really expect you to argue against freedom of expression.
