How is a representative democracy less "mob rule" than a pure democracy?

  • People say stuff like if 51% of the population said that the other 49% should be executed in a pure democracy it would happen, but in a representative democracy couldn't 51% of the people just elect a candidate that wanted to kill the other 49% and have the same outcome? All this time i thought it was the constitution and supreme court that protects the rights of the minority... ( not that i'm not supporting a pure democracy, putting everything to a vote with a population of 300,000,000 people is impractical, i just don't understand why people say these things )

    Both can do the same harm thats why a democracy needs to be strictly limited by constitutional authority.

The only reason I don't like pure democracy other than difficulty of infrastructure, time restraints, and tediousness, is that I don't trust the majority of voters to make a good decision because most of them are stupid. That being said, I don't trust the politicians either, so they both have reliability flaws. In the end, representative is just easier and more convenient, so we get that. Hell, in the Constitution; "Government can only exist with consent of the governed." This means in pure democracy, if 51% of the population voted for anarchy, we would have to disband the government, or more likely just continue on anyway and prepare for riots......................
