Is there any possible way to get lighter eyes?

Whats the best way to get a chance at pararescue if your eye sight is 20/200 in both eyes?

  • hello, im 19 yrs old and currently trying to enlist in Air Force pararescue. went to my local meps to enlist under pararescue the other day, at the end of the day they told me that my eye sight is around 20 200 in both eyes and that pararescue is out of the picture now. i really want to try out for pararescue, ive been training since i was 17 yrs old for it. they suggested that i join the air force, get prk surgery and then crosstrain to pj from there. i would like to know the fastest and smartest way to get a shot at pararescue? i heard that i would have to work at the enlisted job for around three years before i get a crosstrain to pj...? why so long i thought they need pj's. i can pass the past test without any problems. would getting eye surgery before joining, then going into pararescue work? any info on best route to pj indoc would be much appreciated... thanks

If you get PRK prior to entering than you have to wait a year because your eyes have to heal. It costs around $3000 if you have a civilian do it. If you enlist into a job and have PRK while your in you can prob cross train a year after that, so all that time is about 3 year. They want you to have 20/20 because having to correct vision while doing jumps and swimming is a big hassle. They wont take lasik because the flap of eye can come loose with water pressure. PRK heals a lot slower but is safer in the long run, that's why they said PRK. You can join the Navy and be a Corpsman for Marine Recon and MARSOC. You can wear glasses in Army Special Forces and become a medical sergent. Good Luck

Sorry man but you can't enlist with pararescue gtep contract. You have three options as you know the first one is don't enlist and pay for prk and then wait one full year before trying to enlist in the USAF. The second one is enlist, there is a waiver available but is only given on a case by case basis to enlisted personal, it is to have 20/200 in the worse eye, 20/70 best eye. One more option is enlist, have the airforce perform and pay for the surgery and then attempt to cross train to pararescue. If you enlist with a four year contract yes it will take roughly 36 months to cross train. Like the other guy said army ranger and special forces have medic positions as well you just won't be performing sea rescues, or search and rescues. Should you choose green berret route instead you have to be 21 to get an 18x contract. Sorry again man, I was paranoid about the eye exam when I went to meps, barely got 20/70 in each of my eyes so I qualified for CCT which is my dream. Don't give up though if you really want to be a pj you know your options, it's still possible.
