Is it legal for a company to fire someone based on their political beliefs?
-
Or is that protected under some anti-discrimination law in the US? I mean, so long you're not debating politics in the workplace or putting stickers or buttons all over the place, you can be a member of whatever party you want... right?? Like, if someone's boss was a hardcore conservative and he found out that one of his employees was a huge Ted Kennedy supporter (for instance), could he fire that employee, or is that against the law?

Answer:
No, that's not against the law. Political beliefs are not a protected class in employment law.

It is not specifically addressed by law.
You can fire him It just isn't considered to be for cause. Meaning you could collect unemployment, but couldn't sue for restitution.
KFC will fire you if you support gay marriage
That depends on the state labor laws. In some it would be legal. You could contact your state government to ask for the rules. They may not help you interpret the rules, but they can get them for you.
It must be and its stupid if its not!! its discrimination, im sure it would definatly stand in court!
Depends on your state and whether you are an At Will state or a Right to Work state. Yes they can fire you for your political beliefs. If your an At Will state (like Washington) they don't have to give you a reason and you can't fight it. If your a right to work state (like Texas) they have to justify it. Only time I have heard of someone getting fired for political beliefs is when there beliefs carry over into the work place causing a distraction or hazard.
No, it is not legal.
