How far does disability pay back pay?

i was first told i had lung problems in 2003(sarcoidosis/fibrosis)i tried to work but i found it difficult. so i tried disability. got turned down. so i tried to work once again but i went from job to job i i just could not do it. so i tried again in 2008.since i applied in 2003 shouldn't i get back pay from that date?i have proof i got sick in 2003. i really tried to work. now im done i cant breath at all.i really need this.

SSI benefits are only payable---in the most favorable outcome, of course--from the date of an SSI applicant's disability application. SSD, or social security disability, benefits, on the other hand, may be established for a retroactive period of twelve months prior to the date of an application for disability benefits.
