What causes swollen ankles?
-
My husband is 67 years old, has a pacemaker, and is taking a number of medications including cardizem and crestor. The ankles are swollen and he doesn't seem to think it is anything. He gets plenty of exercise...and his blood pressure is controlled. What is the problem?

Answer:
Congestive heart failure, kidney failure, old age and may need his medications adjusted due to water retention. Tell the doctor on his next visit.

idk, but swelling of the lower body can mean kidney problems. Maybe you should check his meds for kidney problems. fyi, many (all?) blood pressure meds damage kidneys but not as fast as high blood pressure does of course. fyi a form of b6 has been patented for improving kidney health, and a form that works similar is P5p (NOT B6 itself). Also thiamine helps but it does ot stay in the blood stream long so people are using benfotiamine, a form from onions, which is not water soluble. I take Thorne Basic B 2x/day whic has P5P. I recommend people take all B vitamins together since they work together and it is common to be deficient. My system is being too slow. You can research P5P at www.lef.org - some of their articles talk about the forms of B6 and their effect on the kidneys. You can go to www.iherb.com and type in "Thorne Basic B" to see what's in that suplement -- it is all active B's in the form the body uses so that your body csan use them despite any deficiencies.
It sounds like your husband's ankle edema may be heart related, despite a normal blood pressure. He should see his physician. In the meantime, he should continue to take his current medications, limit his salt intake, and elevate his lower legs. Make the appointment for the near future, but a trip to the emergency room is not necessary unless he should develop shortness of breath.
He has "LOW THYROID" that causes lower limbs EDEMA (Fluid accumulation) there. It can be a complication of the drugs taken. See a Doc.
