Are allergy eye drops bad for you?

Can 6 yr old allergy eye drops cause problems to the eye?

  • The bottle had been opened and had black spots on the outer portion-it was dark so I did not see it. Can this cause conjuctivits, blephartis or dry eye-it really only affected my left eye-my right eye does not have these issues. It initially caused redness, then came burning, itching, etc. It has caused me much anxiety over how it looks today. Thanks for any responses...

  • Answer:

No doubt bacteria developed in your 6 year old allergy eye drops. If so, you may have contracted a bacteria infection. Call your eye doctor or family doctor to rule out either. If you do have a bacteria infection you will be prescribed an antibiotic eye drop/ointment. Good Luck!

HI David, I am sorry this happened to you. Generally eye drops have a shelf life of three years. However, once opened the shelf life is only one month. You have made an honest mistake. We all do that several times each day but I do have colleagues who are perfect. Sorry, I meant to say, "they think they are perfect". Yes conjunctivitis, red eye etc can develop. However, the eye is washed with tears regularly. If you do not develop any difficulty with the first ten minutes then it is unlikely to happen. I say this because the eye is washed naturally, from one side to the other once every 54 seconds. In ten minutes it would have been washed about 11 times. Other existing conditions and virulence of the the infecting organisms could alter whet I have said.
