Split or full body workout for muscle mass?

I am looking to gain muscle mass, similar to how Lou Ferrigno was built back when he was in Pumping Iron and the Incredible Hulk. I'm not saying I want to be that size as soon as possible, I'm just saying that I am more interested in muscle mass and size rather than muscle definition and tone. What kind of workout would be better for gaining muscle mass like that, a split workout or a full-body workout? Also, how many exercises, sets, and reps would a split workout require for each muscle group? Thanks.

If you work out more than twice a week - split, otherwise do full body workouts
