What are some good exercises to prevent/help a bad back?

ok, I go to the docters and ask if they have any advice to help a bad back, and all they tell me is that exercise will help, I know this is true...but... which exercises help? which ones are the best for this thing? what should I be careful of and what should I NOT do? and, is there any tips to these exercises so I know that I'm doing them right, and not actually doing more damage to my back? and, apart from exercise, what else can I do? any tips?

Swimming is excellent for you. Its an all around cardio exercise and the water will support your back preventing you from damaging it...
