Do you need math to be a programmer?

What's the point of math?

  • What's the point of math? I find it's a waste of time.. I understand that you need to have knowledge of basic math for daily routines, but honestly, when are we going to apply advanced math we learn when we get out of school? So many people try to counter this argument with "If you want to be a computer programmer, you have to have a good understanding of math", blah blah blah. Sure, some people may become a computer programmer, but the majority won't... If you compare the jobs that require employees to know calculus 2 and those that don't.... its quite obvious that we don't need to learn math! It'd be stupid to teach kids math just because a small portion of students are going to need math in the future.. So the "you need to know math to do this and that" argument = null. Why isn't the education system split so that students can choose every single course that they take? If someone wants to be a mathematician, hell, sign him up for math! But to the other kids, the majority is going to be a waste of time. Why don't we learn how to efficiently invest in stock rather than learning the techniques of integration? The education system doesn't make sense to me......

  • Answer:

The education system IS split and you CAN choose. All the courses are available in academic and applied. If you do not want to go to university and into any of the science degrees, just choose applied. You can even get into college graduating with only applied courses.

If that is the case, then why do computer programmers need to take english? You need to take math so you have a balanced education. You will have to deal with people outside of school who do need to know math, and if you don't know some of it, then you will have a tough time understanding what they are trying to say.

Essentially if you're doing high-end maths you've most probably picked it as a subject that will help you in later life. If you've picked maths and aren't going to use it...well perhaps you should have chose your subjects better.
