Having parental issues with the FAFSA, advice needed.?
-
Hello, I started my FAFSA application in my senior year of high school. I'm a dependent student since I live with my mom. I need her signature and social security number but she refuses to sign it. I'm working full time to pay for school but it is still not enough to meet tuition. I brought up the FAFSA again in November for her to sign, still refusing she signed it as my father with his social security number. She also lied about my address thinking that would declare me independent. I filled out the form but I needed her for the parent demographics, I wish I didn't since she is screwing it up. She changed all the income information to 0 so that my EFC is 0, which is somewhat true. She waited a year to sign it, now I start school in 6 days and she lied on the form. My question is, what can I do to correct the situation? Is there a person I can see or a form I can fill out to fix this? I can't do a private loan because no one will co-sign. We've been selected for application review because everything is 0, she lied on the whole thing. I can't go back and change it because she already submitted it and we got the review papers. What can I do?

Answer:
If she changed her income to $0, and your EFC is $0, that means you get all monies in student loans. I don't see a problem with this. EFC is Estimated Family Contribution. You are not expected to use any household funds for college, it will all be offered in student loans and grants.

First of all you are a senior in high school and therefore did NOT need to fill the fafsa in November. The application that was filled (somewhat errounously) applied to the fall11/spring12 semester. Seeing how spring 2012 is now and you are safely tucked away in a high school building there is no need to fret. If you wanted financial aid for the fall semester (cause you are planning on going to college) you are supposed to fill out the 2012-2013 FAFSA. Don't say I am being sneaky but I think you should use another adress (and possibly move away from your mother's house as well) for it looks like they don't want to provide you with any information regarding financial aid Parents have a right to thier own opinions and they can be against financial aid if they want to. Seriously, they can! My parents are seriously against financial aid and so are my relatives, even those that went to college for a semester (my Uncle Hector went for 2) only to drop out because they could not afford it (as in don't you think it would be better had they applied for financial aid. but no, my grandparents gave a lesson against it that has everyone really against it. Even I was against financial aid at some point, enrolling in college and paying out of pocket just to show them that they could pay for it and graduate. I spoke against financial aid in a political science class not so much cause I was against it but because I felt that since I had to suffer to pay for my classes, everyone else had to) By the way this brings me to point 2. Not even the government is required to pay for anyone that is of age, which means at any day, even the fafsa website can be gone (I'm writing a story about that topic, seriously) So here are your options, to be taken into consideration by your own judgement 1) A lot of 18/19 year olds can find that they can pay for college on thier own with a part time job so long as they attend a community college and don't overdo the classes 2) You could file independenly by moving and showing proof of income. That is done with paycheck stubs or good old (its tax season officially) w-2 forms 3) you can wait till you are 24 to go to college, that way you will be able to file fafsa independenly no matter when what or where. I realize this is not the best option because by then you probably won;t wanna go anyways (sigh) Whatever you decide to do I wish you sucess in college or in the workforce. I do not blame you because me and my younger sisters have been in the same situation ourselves
