Is electrical engineering a good major?

Should I double major in electrical engineering and physics.....?

  • If I double major in electrical engineering and physics, while maintaining a high GPA will it help my chances of getting into a prestigious grad school (MIT, Stanford, University of California-Berkeley) for electrical engineering? I'm currently an electrical engineering major, but got a letter from my physics professor persuading me to double major, along with a possible position available for me to work in a research lab if I choose to do so. I don't think a single electrical engineering bachelor's degree from the school I'm at now (Southern Illinois University), even with a good GPA, will be good enough to get me into one of those prestigious schools as mentioned above, but I'm not sure. So I thought maybe by double majoring it could help my chances if I keep my grades up.

  • Answer:

If you can think you can handle it, go for it. Do take note, though, that double majoring engineering + anything will most likely greatly increase your workload. In fact, some schools disallow a double major if you're already majoring in engineering (like mine), so just make sure you're ready to handle boatloads of work.

Don't do it. You risk botching both Majors. Consider transferring to Engineering Physics or Engineering Mechanics.

Simply stated, you cannot double major in any engineering field and something else and have any hope of graduating in less than 6 years. You are better off taking just the engineering and then go to grad school in the same length of time. I am an EE and double majoring engineering and anything else and to try to do it in 4-5 years and you will likely get too low a GPA to get into grad school. If you can do it, fine, but your GPA will suffer. The goal is to get out of undergrad school as fast as you can and into a grad school as soon as you can. Better to go to a somewhat lower grad school for your masters then slingshot into a top school for a fully funded PhD.
