Why do we need to study IT?

Do you need to be great at maths to study medicine? If so, why is maths needed to be a doctor?

  • I am curious whether I would need to be great at mathematics to study medicine, and if so, why is maths important in medicine/to be a doctor? Apart from prescribing the correct dosage, why else is maths needed? Because surely the main thing in medicine/becoming a doctor is practical, I.e. studying the anatomy etc.

    Being able to do simple and complex calculations quickly is rather important, along with being able to interpret quantitive data. For instance calculating the correct heart rate when studying the results of an ECG on a patient in their late 70's. Other than that, it insures the intelligence of the applicant. If one achieves good grades in Mathematics and Sciences, we can assume they are of sound intelligence and will cope on a medical degree program - which is exceedingly difficult. So, I'd say pretty damn important. You'd be surpassed with how much mathematics a GP will do on a day to day basis. Probably nothing insanely difficult; they aren't maths graduates after all. But it's a lot more than just calculating prescription dosages. I hope this helps and good luck for the future!

You need to read charts with getting units, be able to prescribe certain amounts of medicine, usually in mg, etc. While it doesn't sound like a lot, the pre read for med school are very strict. You will need the basics algebra, geometry, trigonometry, as well as calculus 1-4. College calculus is very tough, especially when you get beyond calculus 2. Also the math is needed for the MCATs and classes in med school. If you like math and biology, you will be fine.
