Can you tube the broad river?

How do you clean the coating off a truck tube so you can go down the river in it?

  • I bought 2 new butyl truck tubes with the intentions of going down a river in them. I done this years ago, and I remember I had to wash the tubes because they had some sort of whitish coating on them that left a black rubbery residue on your skin. I just scrubbed them in the bathtub with dish soap and the rough side of the dish sponge and rinsed them with hot water. This helped, but did not completely clean them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Answer:

I've used windex in the past to clean off old inner tubes. You still get some rubber rubbing off no matter what you do. Over time less and less will come off. You just gotta use the tubes a lot.

The coating is a kind of lubricant, to help the tube slide around inside the tire, when you put air in it. I think a bit stronger soap should remove it fairly nicely, something designed for grease removal, but nothing with any solvents in it, like kerosene or paint thinners.
