How Does Light Graffiti Work?

The check engine light went on after repair work. (timing belt, drive belts, valve cover gasket, water pump )?

  • My car is a 2004 Hyundai Accent, it was 109575 miles on it I am the original owner. I recently had a lot of repair work on the car. It is almost paid off and I want to keep it for at least another year. I had the tires replaced an alignment done, the valve cover gasket replaced, the 3 belts replaced, the cv axle replaced. Also they said the timing belt was way over due it had never been changed. I had that replaced as well. ( everything but the timing belt had been recommended by the dealer as well, but where I went was less expensive.) I picked up the car tonight and the check engine light was on, It has never been on before. I drove about 15 miles. The light stayed on. I had to go in a store, parked the car. When I started it again the light was off drove another mile home, light never came back on. Should I take the car back or could the light have been on because of all the work they did and just needed time to reset itself? Like I said even with everything it needed done the light was never on. Also did I really need the new timing belt and water pump, that was something the dealer never mentioned, but another place i took it to for an oil change had said the same thing.

  • Answer:

yes all cars at about 100K recommend change ,if it brakes while you are driving, big time engine damage. the water pump was replaced (almost due) because of the labour involved (it's right there now).

Yes the timing belt was way overdue. The check engine light could be related to the work you had done or not. There are thousands of things that can set it off. Get it checked and go from there. Your owners manual will have the service intervals. If you don't have it Midas lists service intervals for different cars.

If the lite went off, don't worry about it. The timing belt and pump were overdue.

your ck eng light only resets when the pos cable is taken off the battery. if light went off look for it to come back on code is stored in vehicle when light comes on . could be related to work done but also could be a new problem have code read and see what it is.

Well, yes, the timing belt was overdue for replacement, Hyundai recommends the belt be replaced at 60,000 miles. Now, since most vehicles have a Water Pump which is driven by the timing belt, they recommend you replace the Water Pump when you have the Timing Belt replaced. However, on your engine, the water pump is not driven by the timing belt and it is not required you remove it to replace the timing belt, so I would disagree with them saying it needed to be replaced due to the fact you were replacing the timing belt unless it was showing signs of going out. I would recommend returning to the place you had the work done at and asking if they would be willing to read the code and tell you what code was set. And ask them if they believe it could have been caused by the work that was done or something that was done wrong. Then, come back and tell us what the code was and we'll give you a straight answer. You can e-mail me ([email protected]) and tell me if you like, I know these vehicles inside and out.

If you had 109,000 on the original belt, yes it was overdue for a timing belt.
