Help with dodge neon brakes?

Drum brakes maintenance help?

  • I have an 05 dodge neon and have to replace the drum brakes in a couple months. I just replaced the front rotor brakes with new rotors and ceramic pads. I would like to put ceramic pads on the rear as well, but i dont know anything about drum brakes. When i got the front brakes done, i didnt need to replace the caliper. Is this the same case with the drum? just replace the pads? Thanks for the help

  • Answer:

Drum brakes are a completely different animal than disc brakes. They operate differently first of all, but secondly, they're a bear to replace if you don't know what you're doing. Not impossible though. I replaced my own drums without ever having seen them before using a Hayne's Manual for my car in particular as well as the general brake manual. You'll need a tool or two, but they're inexpensive. The rebuild kits are usually inexpensive as well. Be prepared to spend a weekend on this if it's your first time. It's not normally a weekend job, but I promise it will drive you nuts your first time. I'd also recommend a camera. It helped me a ton when I had a pic of the completed package to reference without having to get up and stare at the other side over and over again.

Drum brakes don't use pads; they used curved shoes. To my knowledge, they aren't available in ceramic. Extended range shoes are available. The drums should be turned down to remove the wear ridges (if they are thick enough). The shoes should then also be ground and shaped to match the curvature of the drums. With extended age & wear / grinding, drums can have insufficient thickness to allow grinding.
