Who applies in car insurance, the owner or the driver?

Does the owner of the car have to be the main driver on the insurance?

  • I have bought a car and was wondering if i had to be the main driver on the insurance? Or could My mum be the main driver and i be the additional driver. This way its cheaper as i am only 21.

  • Answer:

It's called 'fronting' and is illegal if it is the 21-y-old person does most of the mileage.

The person who does most of the miles should be the main driver. However the registered keeper of the car (the person who's name is on the registration document) should generally be the policyholder (some insurance companies insist on this). The policyholder does not have to be the main driver. Be honest with the insurance company. Tell them who owns the car, who is the registered keeper, who drives it the most, and what other drivers you want covered and they'll give you an accurate price and will honour the agreement in the event of a claim. Tell them any lies, and they'll refuse to pay out in the event of a claim.

You have to be very careful. Even if your Mum is the main user and you put yourself down as a named driver, and then you have a crash, the insurer will still investigate you for fronting even if you aren't. It will be down to you to prove to the insurer that you aren't and if they aren't satisfied with your answers, they can void the insurance. Usually, if you own the car, you would need to be the policyholder as you are the one who would stand to lose out financially if there was a loss. They would then ask you who the drivers are and would ask you who is the main driver. That is your opportunity to name your mother as the main driver should you choose to do so.

Check with your insurance company 1st. Most likely since you are the owner, will be listed as main driver, plus add your mother, since you live with her. But,,,,since you are going to the university and the car will be parked at home, and not available to you to drive at the uni, then it could be cheaper to insure. Many companies will give a discount since if the car not available to drive on a regular basis. good luck

Hi Natalie, If only it were that easy. Unfortunately this tantamounts to fraud, and in the event of you having a mishap in your car you wouldn't get paid out. Ask the Company you intend going with for confirmation

To be safe on this one:- If your Mum is genuinely going to drive the car more than you then her name should be in the log book as the registered keeper (this does not mean she is the owner - you have the sales documents to prove that you are). Then she takes out the insurance and adds you in as a named driver. The insurance company will not be happy if you are the registered keeper and the policy holder and yet not the main driver -in fact they probably won't insure on this basis. Bear in mind they will also get suspicious if she already has insurance on another car in her own name. Finally, if your Mum insures it then any claims etc go on her insurance record too.

If the car is registered under your name, you must be the primary insurance holder.

Most insurers will insist that the owner and registered keeper are also the policy holder and main driver. "Fronting" as described by other answerers is such a problem now that the insurers are likely to not agree to do this for you. You need to talk on the phone or face to face with an insurance broker as you cannot do this on line

no, provided you are indeed being honest about who drives it most and also tell the insurance companies where it is kept. I suspect the premium won't allow for this as the insurers will assume you are 'fronting' (even if you aren't) and will price it accordingly.

At least in my state, its not illegal at all to drive a car thats not insured in your name. You just wont be covered in an accident and probably will be sued
