What Is Drilling?

What is milling, turning and drilling?

  • Answer:

Drilling is a plunge cut only, with the tool rotating, the work is stationary. Milling can combine that with lateral or rotational motion around a center that is not in line with the rotating cutter. Milling is cutting material by moving it with relation to the rotating cutting head. Turning is rotating the work about a center while the tool is stationary, and then the tool advances toward the center (approximately) to deepen the cut One more type of machining is shaping. Neither the tool or the piece is rotated. They are moved together to force the metal to shear away. Broaching is a form of this. You can cut square holes that way.

I would add to the first answer that you can drill a hole with a none rotating drill on a lathe by rotating the workpiece.
