What Is Drilling?

What is the best tool to use for drilling a hole in a bullet casing?

  • Before you give me a lecture on safety, let me assure you that the bullet has been fired, and there is no powder or primer left in it. I work with shells a lot, but I've never needed to drill into a casing before, and I'm not sure exactly what to use. I'll be drilling a hole straight through the side of the shell. My dremel tool is ancient, and it's time for me to get a new one. Basically, these are the things I need to know: 1. What is the best tool to do the job? 2. If I use a dremel, will a 4.8-Volt do the job? Any insight on this would be much appreciated! Once again, I'm not drilling into a live bullet, and I'm well aware of all the safety precautions I need to take. Thanks!

rede has it right,,, the shell needs to be stabilized,, also you will need to go slow as the drill bit will tend to walk off the shell, if you can gently use a center punch to make a starter spot on the shell this will keep the drill on target

well i would use a drill press with small carbide bit put a bad of oil on it and let the bit work also if you do decide to do this method i sugest using a couple pcs of wood in the vise of the press so you dont scar the bullet with the metal clamps of the vise if you dont have access to a drill press def try to atleast use a vise much safer but any type of hand drill i dont think power will matter should go threw the casing no prob but for a much more precise hole use a press
