Why are doctors so quick to diagnose you with depression, but not bipolar disorder?
-
A year ago, I went to the walk in clinic with a sore throat. The doctor took one look at me, said I was obviously depressed and prescribed me cipralex. Since then, my mother and I have realized that is almost for sure bipolar disorder, not just depression, but my doctor just sent me to some crazy neuro feedback lady who doesn't believe in diagnosises or pills, just treating every illness in the world with the same brainwavey dohickey, sick or not. I was off the pills for a month because my mom took forever to buy me more and that's when I realized I was way less manic with out them. Before started them, I had never been that manic, but when I went on the antidepressants, I went nutso. I just never notices because it was helping some with the depression and that's what I was paying attention to. I had a manic episode, the worst one in the month, a few days after going back on my meds. That's when I decided to do some research and found out that they're not meant for anyone under 18. (I was 16 when they were prescribed) or anyone with mania. They even recommend you don't take it til 25 or If you have any bipolar family members. So why is it that a walk-in clinic doctor can prescribe me potentially harmful antidepressants, but my family doctor can't even refer me to a specialist that will get me the medication I need? What's so different between misdiagnosing depression and misdiagnosing bipolar? (and that's really the only thing they're risking.)

Answer:
Ik ow this to by experience and in my mom thought I was bipolar so she took me in to the doctors but instead of bipolar I was suicidally depressed I guess it's because when you are bipolar sometimes it may just look like depression
