How To Grow Orchids?

How do you grow orchids indoors?

  • I really want to grow orchids. Not for selling or competing, but just because I think they are pretty. I want to start from scratch. I want a pot, some seeds, and some dirt and get started. I have no idea what I'm doing. The only thing I've ever grown was tomatoes and peppers. Any tips and advice would be great!

Most orchids do propagate from seeds, but require a sterile environment. You are better off starting off slow, going out to a store and buying a standard Phalaenopsis, and seeing if you can keep it alive for over two years. Orchids are very picky plants. If the flowers germinate naturally, they will form an extra plant on the stalk which after falling off, you can then pot separately. Check out the link and start doing some research online, they are very unique plants and while rewarding, are truly a hobby.

You won't enjoy doing this from seed and it would take years for your orchid to flower. Most folks can't even keep their Trader Joes orchids alive. I suggest just buying the orchid you want, in flower, then try to keep that one alive. Orchids like indirect, bright light. I put mine on the north windows so they almost never get direct light. They are semisucculent, so don't like to be pampered, I put 1/4 cup or so of water through each one once a week, a little more often when it's very hot and dry in the house. That's it. Most folks kill their orchids with too much attention, or put them where they either don't get enough light or get too much light to flower. There is lots of written material on this if you do a search. Trust me on the orchids from seed thing, you don't really want to do that.
