Can you have a UTI without having bacteria in your urine?

UTI or STD on dipstick?

  • I went to the DR for a UTI and they did a urine test and first did a dip stick test and the dr said it came back positive for a uti so she put me on an antibiotic then sent it out for a culture and the nurse called me yesterday and told me it was negative for a UTI. Does that mean I don't have a UTI or could it have been a slight bacteria? I'm just worried it's an std... would and std show up mistakenly for a positive uti dipstick??

    Probably not, there are certain kidney conditions that will appear as a UTI on those dipstick tests though that can be caused by an underlying reason. For example if you have renal disease or kidney disease this will show up positive for WBC's in the urine, meaning that you could have a problem with your kidney function. Especially if the dipstick tests are postivie for an extended period of time. That would be a clear indication of a serious kidney disfunction that needs to be addressed by a specialist. I would recommend getting some dipstick tests at the store 9.99 for a pack of three, if this goes on for more than a month I would find a specialist.
