What could this pain above my kneecap be?

Knee pain with popping and crunching, pain around kneecap , please help, solutions, etcx?

  • I am 20 years old and very active. i love riding horses, being around horses, running, working out and dancing on my wii, yoga, riding bikes, etc, but i have this annoying pain, popping and crunching sensation in my right knee. I also did marching band for 4 years and fell through my parents front deck about 3 summers ago. the athletic trainer told me, he was pretty sure i had runner's knee. i cant run anymore due to the fact of my knee feels like giving out. i cant really completely straight my knee without it shaking, also cant keep it straight or bent without the pressure of feeling like it needs to pop every few minutes or so. It swells and its like it never stops hurting. i have pain around my kneecap and sometimes under it. i cant stand for very long, also make driving my truck hard at time. I have a knee brace for maximum support with hinges to keep my knee from hyper extending because i have done that once before. the thing is i hate wearing my knee brace, having people ask me what i did, hiding it under my pants, especially, the restriction of a knee brace. there has got to be something better than having to wear a knee brace all of the time. i need some suggestions, help, just something. something has to give......PLEASE HELP!!! GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!! Note: exercises have not helps and neither does advil, tylenol, or motrin. plus cant take alot of medications for pain due to the medications i am currently on.

Hello again, Alixandrea Actually, I asked my mother about this, cuz she is a doctor and she said that these are the symptoms of "arthritis" and a lot of athletes suffer from this, because of constantly forcing themselves. She also said that you shouldn't force your knee anymore, take it easy and no more running. I mean that you can ride your bike, but not force yourself to get high speed or do it for resistance (it's OK if you're not feeling the pain when you're doing it). And when it swells or starts hurting you just take your meds. About your knee brace, use it until you'll be much better and you'll feel that you can do it, without it. Get well :) and can I add you to my contacts?

Hi Alixandrea i have the exact same injury as you have wrote about. Im a frequent runner and have started to hit the 11 12 mile mark now i have this very annoying painfull crunchy knee. When i get to roughly 4 to 5 miles the pain intensifies and forces me to stop. Does this also happen to you. I found a link online which may be what we have this is the link http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_5/194.shtml. Next step for me is the docs and hopefully he refers me to someone in the know. Let me know if you find out anything that can help this annoying injury. All the best Andrew

You need to see an orthopedist or possibly an orthopedic surgeon or both. There's no such medical condition as "runner's knee" -- it's just a catch-all phrase used by sports doctors, coaches, etc. A 20 year old should not have the symptoms you described -- they aren't normal. Make an appointment with a reputable orthopedic physician, let him order X-rays and tests, and prescribe a proper treatment. Good luck! ~~RN
