What is the suicide rate in Japan?

Why does Japan have a high suicide rate?

  • Last month I had to attend a funeral in Japan. A good friend of mine commited suicide. Two days before he killed himself,he told me over the phone that he accidentally got his girlfriend pregnant. He was only 14. But at the funeral she told me she will get an abortion and she told me she was gonna tell him but she could tell him on time.I saw the tears running across her face. Why are they killing themselves? They're my favorite people.

  • Answer:

Due to technology advancement, many people in Japan have decreased or stopped communicating with others. This lack of communication would lead to loneliness and caused high suicide rate.

Work and stress. The average Japanese works longer than the average person in the west (they even work longer than Koreans, Italians and Greeks) it is not surprising to see some committing suicide

Daisy is the only one making any sense. Luis and ...... make me want to kill myself. The one thing I disagree on is cultural acceptance. At least from what I have been told it brings shame onto the family. Can bring on financial burdens too if the person in question jumps in front of a train and disrupts service. I think the daughter of a friend killed herself. About 13 years old. I say think because they didn't tell anybody about the death and there was apparently no funeral, at least a public one. Why would a school kid kill themselves? Hate to say this, but the Japanese follow the herd. In this case lemmings. Others do it, must be the way to deal with problems. Just follow the herd, pack or flock. Stress is another. This is just personal opinion in part. The factual part is that the Japanese don't really show their emotions easily. That has to be stressful. Which, and this is the opinion part, can lead to suicide. I've been told that when I get upset with myself on the golf course it makes others uncomfortable. Makes no difference if I am winning in the group as I am playing to my own expectations, so I am not angry with anyone other than myself, but that can make others 'uncomfortable'. Not healthy in my opinion. Japan is #7 worldwide. U.S. is 41st.

Luis is factually incorrect. Around 80 people die every day, not every year, by committing suicide in this country. The reasons are varied, like people with diseases no longer wanting to endure the excruciating pains, escaping from debts, you name it but considering that there's a significant sexual bias in the figure, with suicide deaths overwhelmingly by males, sociologists should come up with some more plausible and convincing explanations already. Personally, I don't find anything wrong with suicide death, if it's done without causing trouble to others, like delaying trains. For some, there are only two options: either live on the streets or hang themselves. Oh btw, i lost two of my friends by suicide. There's this interesting article about the relation between suicide rate and taxation that i read recently. The suicide deaths have been over 30 thousand annually for over a decade. There's a sudden upward spike in the rate when these high numbers started and that coincided with the last hike in consumption tax. Pundits say if another hike is implemented, which is becoming more and more likely, there might be another upward spike and the number of annual suicide deaths could reach 40 thousand, if not 50.

I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. I know how you feel. My father committed suicide last month. I often wondered why he did such a thing but he was depressed and wasn't in his right state of mind. I think its because when people feel down or cornered they try to find an easy way out and believe by committing suicide all of their problems will go away and they will no longer need to worry. But they often look over the fact that there family and friends are left to suffer after their passing. With your friend he was probably scared since he had no job, and didn't think he would be able to financially support his girlfriend and child. He might also have felt like he was letting down his family and throwing away his future. Sadly, we don't know exactly why people do things like that, we can only speculate. May he rest in peace. Concerning the high suicide rates in Japan, i believe that this is because in Japan people who go to Psychiatrist or Counselors are looked down on. Even where i'm from (Texas), if you go to a psychiatrist people automatically assume you must go to one because your crazy and avoid talking to you or treat your differently. I found this on a website about Japans suicide rates: There's no single factor (concerning the high suicide rate), but experts point to a combination of economic woes, poor mental-health resources, lack of religious prohibition, and cultural acceptance of the practice. The stigma attached to mental illness—and the psychiatrists who treat it—may also contribute to the high suicide rates. I hope i helped! If you want to talk to someone and feel free to email me.
